Why are we doing this?

To improve clinical outcomes and lived experiences for Women with Epilepsy in Pregnancy following the recent clinical evidence:

  • MBRRACE Report 2023
  • Increased risk maternal death x 10
  • Increased risk stillbirth & miscarriage
  • Anti Seizure medications can increase risk fetal abnormalities
  • Epilepsy care prioritized as part of National Bundle of Care for CYP 2023

How are we planning on doing this?

Collaboration! between Epilepsy Action and NHSE North West Chief Midwife Claire Matthews

  • Benchmark current maternity pathways
  • Co-develop best practice pathway
  • Co-develop Maternity Pathway which includes:
    • Service specification of minimum standards
    • Resource pack to support practice including self assessment tool
    • Regional clinical guideline
  • Roll out across North West & recommend subsequent adoption across UK
