Update: 16 September 2019
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has written to GPs and pharmacies to say that supplies of tiagabine are currently available via specialist importers.
To get imported tiagabine you will need a new prescription from your GP. The DHSC has advised GPs to identify any patients at their practice who may need a prescription for imported tiagabine. However, if you are due to run out of supplies before the end of October you may wish to contact your GP now, rather than wait to hear from them.
Update: 19 August 2019
We have heard from Teva, the makers of Gabitril, that Gabitril will not be back in stock before the end of October. This further delay is caused by a problem with part of the manufacturing process. This is a Europe-wide issue.
Teva have also advised us that the same manufacturing problem may mean that Gabitril 10mg could experience a disruption in supply in early 2020.
If you are due to run out of Gabitril before the end of October we would advise contacting your epilepsy specialist urgently. This is so you can discuss as soon as possible, what to do before you run out.
Update: 1 August 2019
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has confirmed that Gabitril is out of stock due to a manufacturing issue that is affecting the whole of Europe.
There is limited stock of the 10mg Gabitril tablets at some AAH and Alliance wholesale depots, but it is the DHSC’s understanding this stock will not be enough to last until the end of September. If your pharmacist is trying to track down stock, they can contact Teva customer services for help.
The DHSC has reached out to medicine importers to see if supplies of tiagabine can be sourced from overseas. However, as the manufacturing issue affects the rest of Europe, supplies may not be readily available.
If you are due to run out of Gabitril before the end of September we would advise contacting your epilepsy specialist as soon as possible. This is so you can discuss what to do in plenty of time before you run out.
Update: 25 July 2019
Gabitril tablets are now out of stock in all strengths. Teva expects to have this medicine back in stock at the end of September 2019.
We are not aware of any other companies in the UK that make tiagabine. We have contacted the Department of Health and Social Care to raise our concerns about this situation and will update this page as soon as we know more.
If you are due to run out of Gabitril tablets before the end of September speak to the healthcare professional who prescribes your medicine for advice.
Update: May 22 2019:
15mg Gabitril tablets are still out of stock, and the 5mg tablets are now out of stock as well. Teva says they expect to have both strengths back in stock sometime between July and September 2019.
The 10mg tablets are in stock.
Original story: April 2 2019:
Gabitril (tiagabine) 15mg tablets are temporarily out of stock. Teva, the company that makes Gabitril, expects to have them back in stock towards the end of May 2019.
The 5mg and 10mg tablets are in stock, but they may not be available at all wholesalers. If your pharmacist is having trouble getting hold of Gabitril tablets they can contact Teva for help.
